Usedom and the bathtub of Berlin
Already for a long time the people from Berlin call the Baltic sea lovingly their bathtub. This is due to the fact of proximity to Berlin and the other that even Kaiser Wilhelm II has declared the island Usedom and the so called imperial baths Heringsdorf, Ahlbeck and Bansin one of his preferred destinations.
Heringsdorf was a place for investors and wealthy, the banker Delbrück advanced the fame and the acquaintance of Heringsdorf as a seaside resort.
There you can still find a lot of prestigious villas, which were built for the rich and noble.
Ahlbeck, however, was dominated by the middle class and craftsmen.
For the period 1893-1918 the imperial Yacht “Hohenzollern” was regularly moored in contemporary Polish Swinoujscie.
Today Swinoujscie is connected on a 42 km long beach promenade with the imperial baths Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin
and can be perfectly explored by bike.
A place farther from Bansin is the village of Ückeritz. This place is on the Bodden and on the sea side.
On the sea side you can find the large campground of Ückeritz, which was in GDR times one of the largest in Europe.
On the lagoon side the famous Café Knatter is situated, a restaurant and water sports school.
From here you can enjoy spectacular sunsets.
For those who want to learn surfing or kiteboarding is a good spot, also for water sports enthusiasts.
The waist-deep water offers beginners and advanced paddlers ideal conditions.
A culinary highlight on Usedom is the restaurant 1900, between Ahlbeck and Heringsdorf where Pomeranian specialties are served.
Moreover, the restaurant of the Hotel Admiral in Bansin, which offers delicious fish dishes.
If you would like to enjoy a a nice evening in Bansin, the restaurant Schloon Idyll is on Schloonsee is highly recommended.
From here you can enjoy wonderful sunsets sitting directly on the lake side.
